Guilin Karst Dreams

Descend into this 180-million-year-old limestone cave, where stalactites and stalagmites form a fantasy landscape illuminated by coloured lights. The cave stretches 240 metres and has sheltered humans for over 1,200 years — Tang Dynasty inscriptions still mark the walls. Local legend holds that the cave's reed plants could be fashioned into flutes capable of luring all living creatures, giving the cave its poetic name.

Stand before Guilin's most iconic natural monument — a limestone hill shaped precisely like an elephant drinking from the Li River. The Water Moon Cave at its base creates a perfect circular reflection in the river, a scene that has inspired Chinese painters and poets for over a thousand years. Climb the hill at dusk to watch the karst peaks turn gold and violet across the river valley.

Cruise the interconnected waterway system that links the Li River and Peach Blossom River with four ancient city lakes — Rong, Shan, Gui, and Mulong. Arrive in Yangshuo and explore the ancient stone-paved West Street, which has been a trading hub for over 1,400 years. Today the street blends local Zhuang and Han culture with a cosmopolitan traveller atmosphere — calligraphy shops, silk vendors, and tea houses sit alongside international cafes. The surrounding karst peaks frame every view, making even an evening stroll feel like moving through a classical Chinese painting.

Climb to the natural limestone arch that frames a perfect circle of sky — locals call it Moon Hill because the arch resembles a full moon rising over the karst peaks. The 30-minute ascent rewards with panoramic views of the Yulong River valley, where water buffalo graze in rice paddies beneath a horizon of limestone towers. The surrounding countryside is one of the most photographed landscapes in China.

Float downstream on a traditional bamboo raft along the quieter, more intimate Yulong River — the Li River's most beautiful tributary. Punt-pole operators navigate through ancient stone bridges and past terraced rice fields while kingfishers dart between the reeds. Unlike the main Li River cruise, the Yulong carries no motorised boats, preserving an atmosphere of timeless rural China.

Ascend to the Longji terraces, carved into the mountainside by Zhuang and Yao minority farmers over 650 years ago. The terraces cascade from peak to valley floor in sweeping curves that follow the natural contours of the land — from a distance they resemble the scales of a dragon's back, giving the site its poetic name. The best viewpoints are reached on foot through Zhuang villages where women still wear traditional silver headdresses and embroidered costumes.

Walk through this living Zhuang minority village perched among the terraces, where wooden stilt houses have stood for generations. Village women demonstrate traditional weaving techniques on backstrap looms, producing the geometric patterns that identify each family's lineage. The village square hosts folk performances in the evening, with Zhuang songs and dances that have been passed down through oral tradition for centuries.

Visit the ancient market town whose karst backdrop appears on China's 20-yuan banknote — one of the most reproduced images in the world. Xingping has been a river trading post since the Han Dynasty, and its Qing-era streets of grey brick and carved wooden shopfronts remain largely unchanged. The old fishermen's quarter along the river is home to families who have practised cormorant fishing for generations.

Drift past this dramatic cliff face on the Li River, where natural weathering has created a pattern that Chinese scholars have long interpreted as nine horses in different poses. The challenge of identifying all nine horses — some obvious, some hidden — has been a traditional game for river travellers since the Tang Dynasty. The cliff rises 100 metres directly from the water, its ochre and grey striations creating a natural canvas of extraordinary scale.

Explore this vast limestone cave system, where crystalline formations glitter like silver under the lights — giving the cave its name. Three distinct cave layers contain formations of extraordinary variety: the Milky Way Corridor, the Snow Mountain, and the Sacred Elephant. The cave stretches nearly 2 kilometres and contains one of the most diverse collections of speleothems in southern China, including rare cave pearls and helictites.

Stand beneath a 1,400-year-old banyan tree whose aerial roots have created a living cathedral of twisted wood and green canopy. The tree covers an area of nearly 100 square metres and has been a sacred gathering place for Zhuang villagers for generations. The site is immortalised in the folk legend of Liu Sanjie — the mythical Zhuang singing girl whose love story is set beneath this very tree.

Climb this riverside hill named after the Han Dynasty general Ma Yuan, who camped here during his southern campaigns. The summit offers the finest panoramic view of Guilin's karst skyline — a horizon of limestone towers rising from the flat plain in every direction. The cave at the base contains a famous stone that local legend says was cut by General Fubo's sword to test its sharpness.

Spend the afternoon exploring Guilin's most vibrant shopping and dining street, lined with traditional architecture and contemporary boutiques. The street connects the city's two main lakes and is flanked by osmanthus trees whose fragrance fills the air in autumn. Evening brings street performers, calligraphers, and vendors of local specialties — the perfect place to find last gifts and savour the city's relaxed southern character.

Spend your final morning at this excellent regional museum, which traces 10,000 years of human settlement in the Guilin basin. The collection includes rare bronze drums of the Zhuang people, Ming Dynasty porcelain, and an extraordinary gallery of traditional minority costumes. The museum's archaeology wing documents the ancient Baiyue cultures that inhabited these karst valleys long before Chinese civilisation reached the south.
